India Today Rankings 2008 Part 2: IIIT-H perspective

You can read part one here

Coming to IIIT-H. For people from IIIT reading this: I think we have the best Computer science programme in India by a large distance. We can match any IIT in terms of faculty man for man. We have all seen Computer Science graduates from IIT's and we are the same if not slightly better! The placements this year are almost 7 lpa(average) which is good going considering we have almost 150 people including PG :( to place. We have almost doubled the A and A+ conference publications this year which is a great trend. We have new research centers coming up as well to add to the almost 20 present. And the thing about IIIT which makes me very proud: Not a single seat is reserved for anybody not even for physically handicapped!

You may ask why IIIT features so low? Well that's a complex question to answer. I was pretty pissed last year when i saw IIIT ranked at 16. The thing is that IIIT-H is not a normal engineering college. The aim is excellence in IT. We are doing that very well. But these rankings are oriented towards reflecting competence in broad array of engineering disciplines. This is perhaps a reason why we do better in Dataquest rankings as they are geared towards the IT industry. I think this is as far as we can push with CS and ECE. Plus these rankings do not consider research work, Curriculum and also the admission process. These are major strengths of IIIT.

Today the only negative thing I can say about IIIT-H is the fee. It is perhaps the most expensive B.Tech in India. But money does not go into anybody's pockets. All money earned is re-invested into the college. So that's fair enough. But on the bright side if you want to study at IIIT-H you will get a loan and with the jobs on offer after graduating from IIIT those loans will seem pretty small.

In conclusion I would say what I had said in my previous post, if any student studying in any of the institutes ranked above us(except for the IIT's) was given a chance to study at IIIT he/she would in all honesty, never turn it down. That is the bottom line!

Could you compare between the B.Tech CS course in IIIT-H and IITs

I'd not take into consideration the rankings from a magazine which puts an institution like VIT in the top 10( above NITs and IIITs)

If you talk just about the course i.e. faculty + curriculum then yes CS at IIIT-H is pretty much up there with any IIT. As of today the only only real difference between a good CS student fron IIIT-H and a IIT is that it is most definitley easier for the IIT grad to get admissions abroad as they do have a better brandname. Remember IIIT-H would be 10 years old this year, whereas the youngest of the 5 main IIT's is 45 years old! Brandnames do take time to build.

d'accord!
India Today's Ranking sucks big time! :)

One should learn to ignore such rankings since they are unscientific and arbitrary. Institutes (IIT/IIITs included) legitimize such stupidity by publicizing them.

As for IIIT-H, the public profile of the institute (as represented by the not-so-nice website) unfortunately depicts a very small percentage of the research that is conducted there. Course information, which is of a relatively high standard (even compared to many IITs), both in terms of the variety and high-end courses which are offered, is hidden away in the intranet. Public perception of the institute will not improve unless the institutes talks of what it does.

7 lpa, and you think you are as well placed as IITs if not better!

on a different note, India today ranking sucks, no two opinions on that.

@ the last anonymous

What makes IIIT as good a place as any IIT is not the placements, but the quality of faculty and the curriculum. Any faculty member from IIIT could walk into any IIT today.

As far as placements go people like amazon,M$ and cisco take almost 20 students each (including ppo's) from each batch. The main point being that in a graduating batch there is quality across the entire batch and not just a few flashes of individual brilliance here and there. What drags the placement down is the fact that there aren't enough companies who can pay that much and take so many people.

Hi,
I'm a mechanical engineer (BE) from Iran, going to India in order to study PG IT.
My first option is MSIT Programme, in IIIT-H or wherever possible.
I asked many friends of mine whom study in India about the ranking of
IIIT, without any result.
I just got confused.
I kindly ask you to let me know:
1- Can I take enterance exam as an iranian student?
2- What is your suggestion about qualty of these universities which
expose MSIT Programme such as IIIT-H, JNTU-H, Osmania, ...?
More over I will appreciate you if you can give me any furthur helpful
information via my email (pezhman.alborz@yahoo.com).
Best Regards.
